The morning broke cold _ but fine. Later clouds appeared and rain set in after the first race. Then there was a lull, after which came an afternoon of frequent showers, the* later ones heavy. The track became soft and mud was much in evidence, making it hard to identify some of the horses. It was unfortunate, but the club has not experienced bad weather previously for eight or nine years. Jacob,* Win Thru’, Renagade and Car Bingen were the early lenders in the Longbeach Handicap After, half a mile Jacob and Renegade were in charge with Sonoma King moving up, after a bad start. Renegade then took charge and three furlongs further on Modern Lady put ,in an appearance. Renegade led Modem Lady, Sonoma King and Jacob to ihe straight. Modern Lady then ran to the front and won easily by three lengths from Sonoma King, who beat Renegade by a length, while three lengths further back Proud Harvester just beat Jacob and Royal Parrish. The winner trotted a solid race, but Sonoma King was unlucky, as he lost much ground before he got going. Insolvent, Epilogue, Sage King, Royal de Oro, and Cam Dillon were ‘prominent in the Trial Handicap after a furlong. Three furlongs further on Cam Dillon and Gold Claim were in charge from Roval de Oro and Insolvent, with Iraq and Mystery Yet handy. There was not much change at the six-furlong post,, where Dundee had moved up to a good position. Iraq led. Mystery Yet, Insolvent, and Cam Dillon to the straight. Cam Dillon then retired. Dundee was handy to. the others three furlongs from the post, and beat Insolvent by a head. Iraq was three lengths away, half a length in front of Mystery Yet. The winner lost ground through swerving out at the start, but then paced a great race. He is a solid pacer, on the way to good class. The Ashburton County Handicap was a good race. Chemvood, Harvest Child, and Peter Locanda soon had Arethusa, Master Roy, and Probationer in close attendance. while at the end of five furlongs Avernus and Silver de Oro also; joined in, the whole field being in close order. There was little change in the next half-mile, but from then Harvest Child, Chenwood, and Peter Locanda had

Silver de Oro as their, nearest attendant. Chenwood retired when the straight was reached. Harvest Child then went on to win decisively by two lengths. Hollo headed the others near the post, but Blue Mountain outstayed him, snatching second place by a head. Peter Locanda, Silver de Oro, and Master Hoy were close up. Harvest Child has raced consistently since he joined L. H. Maideus's stable, and his performance was a good one.

The Sapling Stakes upheld its record for great contests. Several of the candidates failed to go off right, Donalda, Gamble, Graham Direct, and Boltaire among them. Gamble lost fully 100 yards. Levity and Headlight were soon in charge. Radiant Gold, Grace M Elwyn, Subsidy and Ironside being handy, while Guardsman joined in after half a mile. Levity was three lengths in front at the six-furlong post, there being no other change. Floodlight retired at the home turn. Radiant Gold led in the run to the straight. Levity collapsed a little further on. Ironside and Subsidy then joined Radiant Gold, while Moana Tama was moving up on the rails, with Donalda and Gamble also showing up. Radiant Gold wag in trouble 100,’ yards from the post, and in an exciting finish Moana Tama got up to win by a neck from Subsidy, who beat Ironside by a head. -Three lengths away came Gamble, with Radiant Gold, Graham Direct and Donalda next. The, winner, thought not so brilliant as some of the others, is very solid, and owes his success to his stamina. .Gamble and Donalda would have given a different complexion to the, race had’they begun right. ■ Elvo set a strong pace •in the Acton Handicap, Native Hero and Morello following him early. 'Five furlongs from home Accras took second place, with William Tell' and Margaret Bell handy. Accras took charge when the straight was reached; and stalled off a challenge from William Tel) by a neck. Elvo was three lengths away, a- length in front of, Margaret Chenault, with Margaret Bell, Paul Drusus, and Goldfield next. Accras is a very solid customer, good in any ground and over any distance. The Mayfield Handicap was a poor race, Teviot Downs was first out, followed by Raclaim and Nelson Prince. After two furlongs the leader tangled, Nelson Prince going to the front. Teviot Downs caught him five furlongs from home and went on to win. easily from Raclaim, with Biddy Parrish, who . made ffp ground gradually, two lengths away. The winner is one of, the best improving trotters in sight,-and be. looks on the way to really good class. Wise Guy, Ronald Derby, and Encounter, were the leaders in the Tinwald Handicap, with Betty Wrack also prominent, while Real Burton and Young Travis also joined in when heads were turned for home. Wise Guy and Ronald Derby then stopped, and Encounter beat Betty Wrack by a neck, with Real Burton two lengths away and Young Travis close up. The race was run in a shower, and the drivers were bespattered with mud at the finish. The programme concluded with the Winter Handicap, run in a bad light and with heavy rain falling. Lord Leslie and Prairie King’were the early leaders from Harold Denver, Jolly Wave, Wild Gry, and Young Frank, , ; Eureka , Boy took charge at the six-furlong post, but Reporter led him and Prairie King to the straight, with Gunfire handy. Then Reporter retired. * Prairie King stuck on to win by a head from War Paint, who finished with a rush, beating Gunfire by a head. Jolly Wave was close Up. It was not easy to distinguish the horses at the finish. Prairie King has now won two races for Mr G. Aitchesoii’. since he secured him at the-Forbury Park meeting last month. How he; will-go : firm ground remains-to be’seen, but he is good in the mud.'
