Spalding, in England, which sends tons ef flowers to the market each year, has attracted widespread attention because of the high price received for bulbs grown there. The highest price paid for a dingle bulb was £SO, a sum which established a record. A correspondent of the Manchester Guardian, commenting on the price, pointed out that even a more remarkable price was paid for potatoes in the same district a >;ear or so before the war. A stone of the famous El Dorado variety changed hands for £I4OO. and farmers all over the country went mad for the time being and sold stock and furniture to buy El Dorados. The story is told that one farmer drove his cattle to mark-t and returned home with the proceeds of the sale in the shape >f the much-coveted potatoes whieh ne easily carried in bis pockets. A still more tragic story was that of a farmer who paid an enormous price for a few El Dorados and unknowingly ate them for dinner next day, his wife having mistaken them lor some grown on the farm.
