HUNGRY SHARK
ATTACKS ON HOOKED FISH While fishing for hapuka off Mount Mauuganui recently, Mr A. Fletcher, on the launch Naomi, had an unusual experience. Mr Fletcher had hooked a fair-sized fish and was hauling it in to the launch when a niako shark made several vicious bites at the hooked fish, and, as the catch came to the surface, the shark even defied the menacing boat hooks, and made repeated sweeping darts, evidently impelled by hunger. After the hapdka had been landed Mr Fletcher threw out a baited line for the mako, and soon had the shark well hooked. After fighting gamely for its life, the shark was landed. It weighed 2401 b. Several owners of local fishing launches have secured fairly good hauls of. snapper during the past few days. The recent storm has disturbed tremendous quantities of kelp and sea growth, and in several instances nets have been greatly overburdened while hauling has been in progress.
