“THE PRICE OF GLORY”
PICTURE'S ROMANTIC STORY LONDON, May 10. A romantic story lies behind the painting Of'a fight at sea, "The Price of Glory," which is one of two exhibits by Mr Ellis Silas at. the Royal Academy. Mr Silas, when at Perth in 1914, secured a canvas 6ft by. 3ft from England, and began painting, in the back room. of his boarding house, tbe engagement between Blake and van Tromp. He enlisted and went, to Gallipoli, leaving the canvas behind. He .visitod Perth again in 1924. on bis way to Papua. On bis way back to London he recovered the cobwebbod canvas, jammed it in-a. cabin trunk and stowed it : in. a lumber cupboard in London. His Wends dissuaded him from cutting it up for a smaller paiuting and his wife urged 'aim to complete it. •'.'.,. Mr Silas served as a signaller in th.j war, and was mentioned in despatches. He exhibited Anz'ac sketches in London and was commanded to take them to Buckingham Palace, where they were shown to the King and the Queen.
