All the carpenters of the city were pressed into service to make the figures, which were life-size and were put up to man the walls on the approach of the enemy. A sevenyears' war has been raging in the country since the old Chinese Yang Tsenghsin, who had ruled well, was murdered by rival officials. The population of Chinese Turkestan, more than 10,000,000 in number, consists mainly of various tribes, many of them not of Chinese origin.
