PALMERSTON The Star of Palmerstou Juvenile Lodge held its fortnightly meeting on May 17. One new candidate was initiated into the Order. . During the evening P.A. Bro. M'Gregor was the recipient of a P.A. diploma, Sup. Bro. Kilgour eulogising his services during his term in the various chairs. Bro. M'Gregor suitably responded. The successful competitor in the recent elocution competition held in Dunedin was Min. Sec. Bro. Capstick, of Pahnerston Lodge. After the lodge closed a shooting match was held, Bros. Bargh, Burrow, and Penny registering the best scores. CROMWELL After a fast and spectacular football match at Cromwell on Saturday, Alexandra defeated the home team by 6 points to nil. Alexandra's score consisted of two fine tries from back play, both unconverted. Cromwell missed several opportunities, especially from penalties. At Bannockburn Wanaka seniors defeated Bannoekburn by 19 points to 11. In the local B Grade match, Lowburn defeated Cromwell by 20 points to 5. On Thursday evening the Railway Rifle Club fired the first of three competitions, two to count, for a club trophy. Two posvbles were recorded on the target by W. Webb and W. Veint, and the latter took the gold button. The •silver button was won ■by D. Wishart. Scores: —W. Veint, 80—ser—80; W. Webb, 80—scr—--80; L. Cardno, 71—9—80; D. Knowles. 72—9—80; V. An outstanding performance was registered by W. Veint. After scoring a possible in the above competition he fired his course for the Tisdall Cup. He put on nine more consecutive bulls and just missed a possible by one on his last shot. The Cromwell Ladies' Golf Club played a competition for a trophy presented by Mrs L. M. Jolly. Weather conditions and the linjes, on account of recent Wavy rain, were unfavourable. The winner was Miss N. Scott (121, handicap 32, net 89). A Stroke Match played by the Men's Club was won by J. Johnson, 118 —36 —82. A Medal Match was won by R. A. Bell, 114— 36 —78. Other leading scores were:—J. Johnson, 117—36—81: B. R. Cox, 101—18 —B3; J. R. Webb, 95—11—84. The district appears to be increasingly popular with sportsmen from distant parts in quest of quail. Several parties are at present in the district from Canterbury and appear to be meeting with fair success. The latest authentic report regarding the chukkor, now to be seen in large flocks in the vicinity of Cromwell, is that the birds have drifted as far as the Nevis Bluff, on the Cv.om-well-Queenstown road. One was caught there last week in a rabbiter's trap. The weather has been more settled during the last two days, but is still particularly mild; with an absence of frost. Paddocks on the lower levels are carrying a wonderful growth of grass, and many farmers boast the fact that so far reserves, of hay are still untouched. WANAKA The final round for Mr D. Campbell's golf trophy was played by the ladies' section on Saturday over 13 holes. Mrs Thompson winning with an aggregate of 172 for the three rounds. The following were the best cards: —Mrs Thompson 80— 23—57; Miss M. Perrow, 76—19—57; Mrs Perrow, 81—24—57; Mrs Faulks, 83—22 61; Mrs Studholme, 98—26—72.. The third and final round for the president's trophy was played by the men's section. J. Perrow was the winner, with an aggregate of, 214. The following were the best cards in the third round:—M. Dickson, 111—30—81. Ladies playing 18 'holes played a flag match, Mrs W. Scaife being the winner. The Wanaka B football team played Ida Valley at Pembroke on Saturday, Ida Valley winning by 9 points (three tries) to nil. j MANIOTOTO Maniototo women's hockey matches played on Saturday resulted as follows: Dunstan. Creek 6 goals, Gimmerburn 1; Naseby 7, Oturehua 3; Wedderburn 7, Waipiata 1. TAPANUI At Tapanui on Saturday the local football team met the Heriot team, and after a keen and even struggle on a very wet ground the game ended in a draw—3 points each. W. Peterson kicked, a goal from a penalty for Heriot, and Varcoe did likewise for Tapanui.
