At the weekly meeting of the South Otago Rugby Football' Sub-union Executive the application of J. Murphy for a transfer from Woodlands to Coast was granted, and the regrading of E. Burring (Clutha) and J. Dick (Crescent) was approved. Additional results of matches played on Saturday were; —Senior: Clinton 5, Romahapa nil; Crescent 27, _Star nil. Second Grade: Woodlands 8, Union 8; Valley 6, Clutha 3; Coast 11, Crescent 5; Toko 15, Waiwera 3. Mr and Mrs James Sutherland, old residents of Waiwera, were entertained at a farewell social on Friday night on the eve of their departure to take up their residence at Rosebank, Balclutha. The greater part of the musical programme was provided by members of the Balclutha Presbyterian Church Choir. The Medal Match on the Balclutha golf links on Saturday was won by E. Barnett, with a score of 86 (less 16). At the week-end a team from the Balmacewen Club visited Balclutha and played an enjoyable game with the local players. Lakes Tuakitoto and Kaitangata are very high just now owing to the backing up of the canal, and practically all the low-lying land in the vicinity of the two lakes is under water. MILTON With the reopening of Tokomairiro District High School this morning after the term vacation there were <lO pupils absent owing to the prevalence of measles in the town and district. The attendance of pupils in Standards I to IV was the moat seriously affected. From Standard V up to the Secondary Department the attendance was fairly good. It was decided to close the school until next Monday morning ( for pupils up to and including Standard IV. The second round of the Toko ,Golf Club’s men’s “Knock-out” Competition played on Saturday afternoon, resulted as follows:—A. Hall beat V. M'Leod, R. M. Rutherford beat H. Stewart, D. M'Donald beat Robertson, A. F. Wethey beat U. Walker, E. Wells beat D. Sumpter; T, Clayton beat C. Hitchon. The death is reported as haying occurred at his residence at Rangiora last Friday of a former well-known resident of Milton in Mr Joseph William Jordan. Mr Jordan was born at Wanganui in December, 1870, and received his earliest education at Marton. Later his parents removed to Milton, where his father was transferred in the Railway Department’s service. He completed his education at Toko High School, and joined the Post and Telegraph Department at Milton. Mr Jordan was afterwards successively stationed at Clinton, Queenstown, Temuka, Denniston, Waiuku, and latterly at Rangiora. Owing to failing health he retired from the department's service about three years ago. He,was an active member of the Rangiora Bowling Club, and prior to his breakdown in health, while stationed at Waiuku, he took a very active part in the work of the Anglican Church. Mr Jordan married a Miss Forsyth, of the Milton district, and is survived by the widow and one son. The funeral took place at Rangiora Cemetery, the service being conducted by Archdeacon A. C. Purchas.
