MR BERNARD SHAW
TO TIIE EDITOB. SIR,—Mr C. R. Allen seems to be distressed by the fact that some people consider Mr Bernard Shaw to be an Atheisl, and in a lengthy letter to you he attempts to disprove this idea by reference to Shaw's works. He quotes certain passages which seem to have little bearing on the question, and asks, "Are these the words of an Atheist? "
More to the point are the following words, spoken by Mr Shaw on September 23 last at the centenary celebrations in honour of the memory of Charles Bradlaugh:—"l do not owe my conversion to Charles Bradlaugb, because I was ten times as much an Atheist as he was before I ever met him." After giving consideration to this statement, can Mr Allen say that these are the words of one who is not an Atheist? The speeches given at these celebrations have been published by Messrs Watts and Co, in a volume entitled "Bradlaugh and To-day."—l am. etc., Dunedin, May 21. Omega.
