TRAPPER'S FATE

CLAIMED BY THE TARARUAS SEARCHERS RECOVER BODY (Feb United Pbkss Associations WELLINGTON, May 20. A party of searchers in the Tararua ranges to-day found the dead body of the missing trapper, Alfred Young, aged 22, near the Cone. The party, which was equipped with a portable radio apparatus, communicated with the Wellington police, and several members of the force immediately left to examine the body.

The party of 16 will stay out all night and to-morrow morning will take the body to Cone Hut, about two hours' journey from where it was discovered. A small party will leave Greytown tomorrow with two packhorses, and proceed to Cone Hut to bring the body to Woodsidc, near Greytown, where it is expected to arrive late in the afternoon.

The Cone is a peak of 3547 ft on the saddle between Mount Hector and Mount Reeves. The ridge lies between the AVaiohine and Jtho Tauhcrenikau watersheds. The country is difficult for searchers, and the party which set out on Saturday had very meagre information.

It was reported towards the end of last week that anxiety was felt for the safety of Mr Young, "of Ghuznee street, Wellington, who had arranged to meet friends at Kaitoke on May 9, after a tramp through the rough country on the Tararua Ranges about the Waiohine and Tauherenikau Valleys, but had not since been heard of. Mr Young, who was 22 years of age, and was said to bo an experienced tramper, set out on April 20 with the intention of going over grounds for which he had a trapping license. Ec had sufficient food for 14 days, but concern for his safety was intensified by reason of the recent bad weather and a fall of snow in the Tararuas. His mother, Mrs Samuel Young, lives in Lake road, Leeston, Canterbury.
