DIRECT SERVICE
BLUFF TO MELBOURNE "A MONTH TOO LATE" (United Press Association.) ' (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, May 20. (Received May 20, at 11.50 p.m.) Mr L. J. Schmitt advises that much pleasure has been expressed in Victoria generally with the decision to provide a direct passenger service from the South Island, via Bluff, to Melbourne for the centenary celebrations and for the coming summer tourist season. The authorities controlling the centenary programme, however, express dissatisfaction because in their opinion the service will commence a month too late. Mr Schmitt has been in Melbourne during the past week, finalising arrangements for specially priced and attractive tours for South Australian and Victorian residents who, as a result of the new service, will be able to visit New Zealand, via Bluff, at considerably reduced cost and without losing the time occupied in going via Sydney and Wellington to the scenic spots of the South Island.
