CITY POLICE COURT

Saturday, Mat 19. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Charged with drunkenness, a first offender was fined 10s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. CLUB FUNDS STOLEN. John Herbert Findlay, who was previously convicted on a charge of having stolen £6 Is, the property of the Tomahawk Cricket Club, and was remanded to allow the probation officer to submit a report, appeared for sentence. — The magistrate, after perusing the report, said he had some hesitation in admitting the accused to probation, but in view of the fact that he had not previously been convicted of an offence involying dishonesty, he would be admitted to probation for 12 months; restitution of the amount stolen to be made forthwith. DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. Stephen Francis Llewellyn Neary, alias James Driscoll, alias John Foley, was charged with behaving in a disorderly manner while drunk.—Senior-sergeant Mac Lean said that on the previous evening the accused had been arrested in Princes street while in a drunken condition. When accosted by the constable he was creating a disturbance and brandishing a knife to the terror of several passers-by. He had a list of previous convictions, and at present was "wanted" by the police in Auckland and in Christchurch.—The accused, in reply to the magistrate, said he had no recollection of nourishing the knife, which he used for demonstrating a knife sharpener he was trying to sell.—A fine of £5, in default seven days' imprisonment, was imposed. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. Robert Ross Duncan, who had previously pleaded guilty to two charges of theft of tools and was remanded pending a report from the probation officer, appeared for sentence.—The magistrate said that the accused's offences were bad breaks for a young man, and had spoiled his chance. He had had a good situation, which he had now lost, and in view of this fact and his previous record, he would be admitted to probation for two years on the first charge, and convicted and discharged on the second. A REMAND GRANTED. Arthur Burton Creagh was charged with having, on April 27, at Port Chalmers, stolen an eiderdown quilt, valued at 30s, the property of the Byrd expedition.—On the application of Chief Detective Young, who stated that the police wished to make further inquiries, the accused was remanded until May 23.
