THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, MAY 12, 1863. COMMERCIAL.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

DAILY TIMES OFFICE, Monday Evening. STOCK AND SHARE LIST. . . . .The demand for Bank of New Zealand shares is in excess of the supply. The price has readied £7 2s 6d (£5 called up), at which sales may be freely effected. The operations of the bank for the past six mouths are understood to have been of a very satisfactory character. . , A parcel of New Zealand Insurance Company's shares are offered at a hundred per cent, premium. This company has been incorporated under a special act, and the liability of the shareholder is understood to be limited to double the amount of his share. A joint stock company has been registered under the title of the “Otago Steam Ship Company, Limited,” the object being to provide effectively, for the service between Otago and Melbourne. Half the capital immediately required has already been subscribed, and no difficulty is apprehended in securing the remainder. Active steps are being taken to carry out the objects of the company, and it is understood that orders will be despatched for two first-class steamers without further delay. MARTIN SHOLL, Stock, Share, and Insurance Broker, Switzer’s Buildings. May 12th, 1803. The Separation movement has now been before the public of New Zealand for some considerable time, and it has been pretty freely canvassed by the Press of both sections of the colony. . , . It is the opinion of an influential section of the community that the question could be settled by a transference of the seat of Government from the North io the Middle Island. That step would, undoubtedly obviate many of the inconveniences of the existing system, but it would not remove that objectionable phase—the government of the natives. It would, besides, only be changing the positions of the two Islands, and imposing the present unsatisfactory subordinate condition of the Middle upon the North Island. It would be satisfactory to neither section of the Colony, and would certainly be violently opposed—and with some show of reason—by the North. . , . .Give us a' powerful central Government for the Middle Island, and an equitable representation; break down the exclusiveness of provincialism, and the Provinces will cease to have jealous feelings towards each other. Otago will then no more excite jealousy in the Middle Island than the West Riding does in England. Mr Beetham, the Warden of the Wakatipu Gold Field, in his last report to the Government, states that the miners on the Arrow and Shotover rivers are busily engaged in s building winter quarters, and packing their stores. Mining operations are somewhat impeded thereby, which materially affects the quantity of gold brought in per escort. The Hit or Miss Company’s tail-race through the Arrow Flat is nearly completed, and has already enabled holders of claims on the flat to bottom, the results of which are highly satisfactory, as much as 50 ozs having been taken from the bottom of a small paddock. On the whole everything looks most favorable for the winter’s campaign. lie also estimates the present population at the Arrow township at 450 persons, at the Arrow river and adjacent gullie« at 1,400; Cardrona Creek, 350; Upper Snotover river, 360; and the flats in the vicinity of Arrow township, 200, making a total of 2,750 souls. This estimate is evidently given in round numbers, and can, of necessity, only be an approximate average,
