DOUBLE CENTURY

PONSFORD STRIKES FORM THE CAMBRIDGE MATCH LONDON, May 9. The Australians commenced th«»ir match against Cambridge University in dull weather. The wicket was good, but the outfield damp. WoodfulL and Ponsford opened the scoring steadily until at 42 Woodfull, in attempting a big hit, was caught at mid-on off Davies, a slow off-break bowler.

In the over Davies unexpectedly dismissed Bradman for a " duck." The ball rose quickly and Bradman played it on. This was the first time Bradman had failed to score in England. M'Cabe started crisply,, but the dead outfield deprived many of his strokes of their full value. The third wicket fellat 71 when M'Cabe was nicely caught at deep mid-off.

Darling, not waiting to get into his stride, lifted Davies for an excellent 6to square leg. The light was poor after lunch, but Ponsford and Darling scored freely, the latter playing a variety of strokes with delightful freedom. The partnership produced 100 in 78 minutes.

Darling, in attempting a big off-drive for his century, .was caught in the covers after an inspiring innings in which he never looked like getting out. He batted" 95 minutes and hit a 6 and: 14 4's. The total was then four for 210. Ponsford reached 100 in 210 minutes. He was not disposed to recklessness, waiting for punishable balls. With the 300 passed, Ponsford and Brown were unexpectedly quiet, though the bowling seemed innocuous. Ponsford gave his first chance at 140. The partnership had added 100. After tea, in 85 minutes, a solid day's batting produced 400 runs in: 315 minutes. Ponsford should have easily got 200 before stumps were drawn, but he carefully played out time. So far he has batted 325 minutes and has scored 15 4's. Brown was polished and safe. He batted for 145 minutes and hit three 4's. Kippax is suffering from influenza, and was unable to play. Several others have colds in consequence of getting drenched in the Leicester match. AUSTRALIA DECLARES. FIVE WICKETS FOR 481. LONDON, May 10.
