RESTORATION OF WAGES

TO THE EDITOB Sir, —In view of the fact that our City Council has decided to restore the cut in all salaries and wages, to the extent of 2£ per cent, I would suggest that it should have discriminated in the bestowal of its gifts. While 2£ per ■ cent, is not much to the lower-paid men, to extend it to those who are in receipt of several hundreds a year savours of basting the fat (loose. While the council is sowing " seeds of kindness" upon the green patches of the eart-h, let a tew seeds be scattered where they are most needed. The winter is upon us, and some of the men will find it difficult to find the 5s levy that is now due. May 1 suggest that-a sufficient sum of money be voted by the council to pay the levy of those married relief workers of our city who, through incsfpacity, are exempt from camp life. I was going to suggest other measures of relief, but "one step enough lor me." —I am, etc., A City Ratepayer. Dunedin, May 9.
