THE ROYAL ACADEMY

AUCKLAND SCULPTOR’S WORK ACCEPTED FOR EXHIBITION. (Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND,, May 9. Cabled advice has been received by Mr W. H. Wright, instructor in modelling at the Elam School of Art, that two works by him have been accepted for exhibition in this year’s Royal Academy. Both works are portrait busts in plaster. One is of the artist's wife, who is shown with her hair bound in a handkerchief. The bust- has not been exhibited in Auckland. The other work is the head of a vivacious young girl, “Eleanor,” with a mass of bobbed hair. It was shown in the City. Art Gallery for a period at the end of 1930. , . . t . Mr Wright had several works accepted for the academy before he came to New Zealand from England a number of years ago, and four since, including the two already mentioned. Those sent from Auckland and accepted earlier were “ Louise, the head of a girl, and “Molly,” a muchadmired half length of a girl fingering her necklace. Both are cast in bronze and are now in the city gallery. NEW ZEALAND ARTISTS THREE TO BE REPRESENTED Three New Zealand artists have had pictures accepted for exhibition in this year’s Royal Academy. They are Mr C. F. Kelly, of Christchurch, Mr Charles Goldie, of Auckland, and Mrs Mary Tripe, of Wellington. Mr Kelly’s accepted painting is of a scene in Lyttelton Harbour. Several New Zealand artists have had their work shown at the annual exhibitions of the Royal Academy, a 9 well a s others noW living in England. ■To submit a picture for the Royal Academy exhibition is costly and often inconvenient for artists living so far abroad as New Zealand. Consequently many New Zealand artists whose work would probably be accepted for exhibition have not submitted pictures to the academy. -No New Zealander has ever been elected an R.A., an honour which does not, as is sometimes believed, follow the acceptance of work for the academy’s exhibition.
