SCHOOL CERTIFICATES

THE NEW EXAMINATION AN APPEAL TO TEACHERS. (Peb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 9. The need for preparedness to meet the changing conditions that were arising was stressed by the Director of Education (Mr N. T. Lambourne) in an address to the conference of the New Zealand Secondary i Schools’ Association. He said familiar landmarks were disappearing, and in setting up new ones the teacher would have to play a very large part. Mr Lambourne appealed to teachers to sec that, both in and out of their schools, nothing was done that would have even a tendency to place the school certificate examination on a lower plane than matriculation. He added that the institution of the school certificate examination was perhaps the greatest advance made during the year. The conference of the New Zealand Technical School Teachers’ Association to-day gave further consideration to remits relating to school leaving certificates. The passing of these remits was preparatory to the holding of a joint session with the Secondary Schools’ Association this afternoon. The following remits were carried: — That the school certificate will not be acceptable to the technical schools if it tends to curtail freedom in the courses obtaining under the senior free place regulations or if it tends to restrict the range of subjects provided by the intermediate regulations. That the association considers it undesirable to delegate to the University of New Zealand any control of the certificate examination.

That the association is of the opinion that the certificate examination and the university entrance examination should be two separate examinations, the former being entirely controlled by the department and the latter by the University Entrance Board.
