BADMINTON

' By' Shuth-e. The , announcement :’that the ;. South Island championships have Been allotted to Dunedin this year brings up the question whether the three, wnaffiliated clubs— Maori Hill, Port Chalmers, and Seacliff—are to be allowed the isame opportuntie* as last vear, when- they were. pefraitted to enter the Otago championships.l* seems that there is more than bility that this forthcoming aa the association feels that these clubs would-be only acting in the interests of the game if they joined up. At present there are only three clubs under the association’s' rule, and; much more could be done to improve matters generally if a larger number of players were taking part. The three clubs —the Dunedin, Twenty,, and United—are reported to have full memberships at present, and the indications are for a. good season. It is a matter for regret that th* season will suffer a serious break, the hall having to be given over from. May 28 to June 15 for the of the Winter Show and the Fanciers’ Club’* show. The time is undoubtedly drawing near when the association.will .have .to consider the matter of making more suitable arrangements by securing . another hall, for breaks of such duration in midseason cannot be in the interests of good play. The Twenty Club is unfortunate in losing the services of P. Btawkeswortb, who has been one of its leading players. It is understood . that he is about to leav* Dunedin to take up his residence in th* North Island. Players who have been associated with C. H. Chapman, formerly of the Twenty Club, will . join in wishing him every success with the new club which he ha* formed. He has two excellent, courts, and should soon have a number of enthusiasts on them.

The association's interclub competitionwill be commenced oh May 15. Each ot the clubs has entered two A teams and one B„team, . The competition matches will be played: fortnightly. The Otago' : Badminton . Association proposes to hold the firstinterclub competition for the season during the present month; A Grade teams to plly round on May 16, and B. grade team's on May 23. Associated elußs are, invited to enter two A Grade teams and oneißiGrade team. Each, team to consist of foilipjladies and-" four men. Matches will consist of four ladies’ doubles, four, meh’s doubles and four combined doubles; each game to consist of 21 up and setting, -yClubs not yet affiliated to; the association wishing to enter teams are requested to communicate with the secretary without; delay. The United Badminton Club’h membersliip roll is filling rapidly and this aqgur# very well for' the future of the club. On Monday evening the courts presented an animated'scene and judging by the standard of play new members are-becoming quickly proficient at smiting;, the elusive shuttle. Leading members of the United Club Visited’Timaru over the week-end and played exhibition matches at the Y.M.C.A. This is the first time an attempt ha* been made in Timaru to put the game on & sound footing. Judging- by the .enthusiasm prevailing in Timaru the game will prove very popular there. Mr and Mrs Sandral, ex-Dominion Mixed Championship holders, are how • stationed in Timaru, and. their experience will be an added help to the game there.. Lady members of the United; Club; are asked to take note of the’ president’* tournament. This tournament- is open to lady members only, ihh ttopby being a badminton rabket given by the president (Mr Penrose). Entries’for this event close on May 21, the entry fee being 6d per player. Games are 21 point* up, players halving the cost of /shuttles. Entries will be received at the, Otago Sports Depot, The draw will be posted up at the club pavilion bn'May 23.
