WAIKOUAITI COUNTY ROADS

, to ths EDITOR. Sir, —For some time I have been trying to iind out who is responsible for the Waikouaiti County roads from the Duucdin boundary. I have written to the county clerk, who states that his work is that of collecting the rates, and that he has no authority over the road. This is the only county I have been in that holds no responsibility over the road for which it collects rates. I have had a talk to the engineer in Duuedin, and he states he is not responsible. I would, therefore, very much like to know wjio is responsible. This road was made tor farmers to come to and from town to get stores, etc. To-day the road is for motorists. Horses are compelled to keep out of the road unless one is looking for accidents. All horse work on this road has been deliberately stopped. I was riding a pony the other day, and going roUnd a bend the horse slipped, and I was landed in the middle of the road. Every bend in this road requires attention; and a track should be made for horse traffic. As it is now, the road is only a speed track for motorists. It is impossible for the small farmer to indulge in # such luxuries as motor cars, and I think the time has come when wo small farmers should demand a, road such as it was years ago or that we should be given free registration for other transport. Another little thing I< would like to mention, and that is that all these ;fine yellow flowering weeds that are growing, especially on the edges of little streams that run across the roads, carry with them their little black seeds to be sown on one's property. I am getting a fair share of them. I asked the engineer who was responsible for not keeping these weeds cut, but he is not, anyhow. It is getting pretty hard if the fanners have to pay for the upkeep of these roads and cut all the weeds and then be deprived of the use of the road in order to satisfy a few big motorists who are trying out their cars and seeing who can cut the corners the sharpest.—l nm, etc., Small Farmer, Mount Cargill, May 5.
