THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

Reports of meetings o£ branches are requested but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be assured.

The drama festival under the auspices of the Otago District Federation of Women’s Institutes, which takes place in Balclutha this month, is creating keen interest among members and competing teams. Entries have been very encouraging. Cups have been donated for the winning teams, and a special prize for the most outstanding performer._ Madame Winnie Fraser is to act as adjudicator.

Popotunoa Institute held its monthly meeting on Saturday, many members and friends being present. The roll call. “ What I did when mother went out, caused much amusement. The competition for the best three pikelets was won by Misses V. and H. Watkins first (equal), and Miss B. Collins second. The_ best three scones was won by Mrs M’Kenzie first, Mrs Smith second, and Mrs M'Haffie and Mrs Nelson third (equal). Mrs Silcock (Clinton) gave an interesting demonstration on “ Bug-making from sheeps’ wool,” and " Silk Art,” which proved very interesting. Members admired the articles which Mrs Silcock had kindly brought to show them. A hearty vote of thanks was then passed to Mrs Silcock for her useful demonstrations. The hostesses were Mesdames Brown and Watkins.

There was a large crowd present at the Tahakopa Institute’s first- birthday, which was held in the form of a social and dance, the following members contributing items. Miss Hibbs pianoforte solo; Misses Murphy, Tunnicliffe, Smith, and Hibbs, one-act play; Miss May Watson, song; and Miss Bromley, pianoforte solo. After supper Mr Adams spoke on the good works of the institute, and wished it every success. The president, Mrs Watson, then called on Mrs Miller, of Houipapa, to light the candle and Mrs Tubman, of Papatowai, to cut the birthday cake. Mrs Tubman and Mrs Mehalski, of Green Island, both expressed their pleasure in being present. Mrs Watson extended to all a hearty welcome. Lucky spot waltzes were won by Mr s Reed and Mr O’Regan and Miss M'lntyre and Mr A. Smith. The points competition for the year was won by Mrs Gould, with Miss Tunnicliffe second.

The May meeting of the Stirling Women’s Institute was held in the Athenaeum. Hall on Wednesday, May 2, Mrs M’Crorie (president) presiding over an attendance of 35 members. The motto for the month was, “ Don’t try to keep a crepe de chine taste on a Britway inj come.” The roll call, " A Beauty Hint, was well responded to. The winners of the old photograph competition were:— Mrs J. B. M'Kiulay, 1; Mi’s J. P. Boyd find Mrs H, Wilson, 2 equal. The competition for the best duchesse set in Britway was won by Miss J. Duncan, with Mr s J. B. M'Kinlay second. Miss B. Scott then read her report of the Annual Otago Federation Meeting. Those contributing items during the social halfhour were:—Mrs / J. Logie, pianoforte solo; Mrs J. P. Boyd, vocal solo; and Mrs M'Crorie, monologue. Mrs M Crone, on behalf of the institutej bade farewell to Miss Briscoe, who is leaving the school and district, wishing her every, happiness; Miss Briscoe suitably replied. Miss Perkins gave an interesting demonstration on “Art Wool-work,” which was attentively followed, a specimen of the finished work being also displayed.
