MR BRUCE ANDERSON

RETIREMENT ON SUPERANNUATION

Members of the Dunedin Customs staff and Customs house agents met at the Customs house on Monday afternoon to make presentations to Mr Bruce Anderson, collector of Customs, who is retiring on superannuation after 40 years' service. Mr G. F. M'Kellar presided. ' Mr J. Kirkwood. on behalf of the agents, presented Mr Anderson with an easy chair, and in doing so referred to Mr Anderson's unassuming efficiency and his kindness and courtesy to them. MiAnderson had endeavoured to assist them in every way and he had always held their highest esteem and respect. Messrs H. C. Campbell. J. Phillips, L. Rountrce and J. W. Jowsey also referred in eulogistic terms to Mr Anderson's good qualities. Mr M'Kellar, on behalf of the Customs staff, presented Mr Anderson with a chiming clock and a silver hot water jug for Mrs Anderson. Mr M'Kellar said

that he was sure everyone regretted that the time had come for them to say goodbye to Mr Anderson. The relations between him and his staff had always been of a most cordial nature. Mr M'Kellar 'also paid a very high tribute to Mr Anderson's ability as an officer of the department. Mr Anderson, who was born in Port Chalmers, joined the Government machinery department in Duncdin in 1894, and was transferred to the Customs Department in Nelson in 1897 as a cadet. He returned to Duncdin in 1899 as a clerk, and remained here until 1911, when he went to Invorcargill as examining officer. | He was promoted to first clerk in the Auckland office in 1914, and received further promotion in 191 S, being appointed inspector in Christchurch. Ho came to Dunedin as travelling inspector in January, 1923, and the month after his arrival here was promoted to subcollector under the late Mr H. R. Spence. In July, 1928, he was appointed collector of Customs in Dunedin. Mr Anderson has been granted three months' leave on full pay, and will then retire pn his superannuation. • Mr G- F. M'Kellar will occupy the position of acting collector of Customs in Dunedin in the meantime.
