A new idea in ship design has been tried by Japan in the building of a new 7600ton aircraft carrier. This vessel, which is described in the new edition of "Jane's Fighting Ships," has two funnels projecting from her starboard side. The idea is to carry the smoke clear of the flight deck. Japan is also to build what will be the most powerfully armed cruisers in the world. They will be about 0000 tons, and have a speed of 33 knots and a main armament of 15 O.lin guus. Two of these are to be laid down this year. Japan has also been reconstructing a number of their battleships, whose fighting value has been considerably increased by this means.
