NOTES ON THE RACING

(Special to Dailx Times.) INVERCARGILL, March 14. The Wyndham Trotting Club's annual meeting attracted a good attendance, but the Rate and totahsator returns hoth showed a slight decrease. The track- was dead at the opening, but improved under the influence of the sun. The racing was keen throughout. All left well in the Ferry Handicap, Coreopsis taking up the running trom Sylvia Moko and Clipped Wings. Cathedral Rose made up her handicap rapidly, and after half a mile was in second place to Coreopsis. Clipped Wings and Sylvia Moko were next, and these were the only ones to have a chance from here on. Sylvia Moko showed speed, but two bad breaks cost her a lot of ground. Cathedral Rose took charge at fiv» furlongs and stayed on nicely to beat

the fast-finishing Sylvia Moko by a length and a-half. Coreopsis, who trotted aolidly but without brilliance, was next, and then a gap to Clipped Wings. Apart from these it was a poor affair. In fact, only the winner and Coreopsis did not make mistakes. j EJrathlee and Bondi Chimes lost their chances at the start of the Novice Handicap, Firecrest and Fairhaven making the running from Seamark and Dame Fortune. Passing the stands Dame Fortune led Black Shadow, Seamark, Firecrest, Royal Guy, and Fairhaven. It was a fine race down the back. Fairhaven moved up, and Royal Guy improved his position. Across the top Dame Fortune and Black Shadow led Jairhaven and Royal Guy, and it was a keen run in, with Fairhaven staying on best to beat Dame Fortune by three-quarters of a length. Monty Chimes was three lengths away, and ti.en Black Shadow and Seamark. It w'ac a keen contest, with the winner succeeding after-many placed performances. Royal Guy*" and Black Shadow- failed badly at the business end, but' the latter fell while doing a preliminary, apd may have felt it.

Onoto and Erin's Pride made mistakes at the start of the Toi Tois Handicap, Frank Mac going out clear from Nellie Osborne, Kibo, and Lena Bingen. Down ■the back Frank Mac was six lengths clear of Kibo, Nellie Osborne, • Lena Bingen, Sergeant Dallas, and Raywood. Kibo collared the leader three furlongs from home and came on with Nellie Osborne in pursuit. Kibo, however, was not troubled to win easing up by two lengths from Nellie Osborne. Frank .' Mac was three lengths away, half a head in front of Erin's Chief, and then Lena Bingen and All Sunshine. Kibo proved the good thing that the betting indicated, and won easily. Raywood was well beaten when he broke two furlongs and a-half from home. Frank Mac faded after showing great speed in the early stages. The chief event was a fine race all the way, with Nelson Pointer recording a striking performance. Lindrum broke at the start, and Goldfield, Blue Mountain Queen, and Willow Wave were slow away. Nelson Pointer made the early running from Erin's Fair, King Mac, and Margaret Bell. This was the order over the first lap, with Blue Mountain Oueen and Goldfield getting handy just behind Erin's Advance. A fine bunch went down the back stretch, but at the turn the field strung out a bit. Nelson Pointer ied across the top from King Mac, Erin's Fair, Margaret'Bell, and Blue Mountain Queen, and an exciting finish saw Nelson Pointer hang on to beat King Mac by three-quarters of a length, with Erin's Fair half a length away Margaret Bell, Goldfield, and Willow Wave. It was a fine race, and Nelson Pointer took all the honours. It was a good performance. The .favourites, after a slow beginning, never got into the firing Chiming Billy and Erin's Star made the early running in the Edendale Handicap from Dusky, Scotfree, and Chiming Wave, and the order was unchanged over the first six furlongs. Then Erin's Star joined Chiming Billy, and at the turn they were half a.length ahead of Dusky, Jolly Drive, Bingen Wrack, and Chiming Wave, in the straight Bingen Wrack challenged Chiming Billy, and the pair drew out, the latter prevailing by half a length in a punishing finish. Erin's Star" was two lengths and a-half away, and then All Sunshine, Nellie Osborne, and Chechahco. Chiming Billy led all the way and just hung on to record a pleasing effort. The favourites were never handy. Lee Way began best-from Journeys End in the Menzies Handicap, but after half a mile Journey's End led Margaret Parrish, Paul Bingen, Lee Way, Western Front, and Minstrel. There was little change throughout until the. home bend. Here Journey's End cleared out and won bv three lengths from Cathedral Rose. Minstrel was three lengths and a-half away and then Margaret Parrish, Kippagh, and Paul Bingen. It was very easy for the winner. Lucky Lee, Single Lee, and Master Lee were the first to show out in the President's Handicap, the favourite, Gold Claim, being slow away. Passing U\e stand Lucky Lee and Master Lee were leading from Single Lee, Gold Claim, and Larsen. There was little change to the turn, where' the favourite was third, and then Single Lee, Red King, and Scotfree. The last-named headed the field turning for home, and then - Scotfree came right away and won by six lengths from Red King. Gold Claim was three lengths back, and then Electric Chimes, Mountain Jewel, and Single Lee. Willow Wave lost his chance at the start of the Final Handicap, aud Lena Bingen led from Sunbloom and Erin's Boy. After half a mile Mocast got handy, but Nelson Pointer, who had been going great guns, broke and dropped out. Down the back Lena Bingen led Sunbloom, Erin's Boy, Mocast, Blue Mountain Queen, Bay Admiral, and Goldfield. There was little change to the straight, where the favourite was noticed wide out. A brilliant run saw Goldfield forge to the front and stay on to bent Sunbloom by threequarters of a length. Blue Mountain Queen was a length ind a-half back, with Lena Bingen right up, and then Erins

Boy and Mocast. As at Invercargill, Goldfield .proved to be a sprinter, above the average, recording a classy effort.
