TROTTING

By SENTINtL. Nominations for the Metropolitan Trot, ting Club's meeting are due to-day. The full brother to Indianapolis, who was to be offered at auction at Tattersail's at Easter, met with a mishap recently, and he is not likely to go under the hammer. He got caught on a ience and injured one of his legs. The damage will cause him to be kept under treatment for a few weeks, but it will not impair his career. M. Holmes has been engaged to drive Harold Logan in his races against Walla Walla, and it is probable that his brother, A. Holmes, will be behind Roi POr. J. Bryce and W. J. Tomkinson will handle Red Shadow and Indianapolis respectively. An Australian paper says W. M'Kay, trainer of Auburn Lad, will drive Walla Walla. L. S. Martin, the owner-tramer of Walla Walla, is leaving nothing to chance, and recently he cabled from Melbourne to a Spreydon sulky manufacturer instructing him to build him the lightest speed cart possible. Each year horses are required to pull less and less weight, and some of the sulkies used now do not weigh more than 351 b, a material consideration in a hard race over a distance. . Owners of brbod mares are reminded thut entries for Volume X of the Kew Zealand Trotting Stud Book are now due, and the compiler is making a concession by keeping the lists open until the end of the present month, volume IX was a creditable publication, but as each meeting passes it is found to be incomplete as to its record of foalings. Some of our most noted racehorses are not included because of the lack of thought of their breeders, but during the last three years most of the careless ones have been educated to the advantages of having all foalings recorded, and Volume X is expected to be bigger and better than any previous iscue. Owners in doubt as to the eligibility of their mares for admission to Stud Book are advised to make inquiries from the New Zealand Trotting Association.

The following reassessments were made after the Timaru meeting:—

Harold Logan is a model of fitness; and his friends can depend upon their favourite going to the post at the top of his form to meet Walla Walla and his local opponents at Easter. Since his last appearance Harold Logan's legs have received special treatment (says "Argus"), with the result that to-day he is absolutely free of any soreness and able to do all that is required of him in his training work. He is an easy horse to prepare for big contests, and his owner, Mr, E. F. C. Hinds, understands him and has a good knowledge of what is required to land his horse at the post fit to run up to his best form. That Harold Logan will reproduce anything he has previously accomplished seems certain, and one has only to look him over and see him pace to realise that he will take a big part in the special races at Addington at Easter.
