COMMERCE AND FINANCE

MOLYNEUX GOLD DREDGING >:;. COMPANY ISSUE ;OVER-SijBSCRIBED^. (United Press Association.) (By/ Electric LONDON, March 13. The Molyneux Gold Dredging Company of New Zealand's issue was heavily oversubscribed. The portion of the Molyneux River held by the company is that between Alexandra and Coal Creek. From Alexandra to the Fourteen Mile Beach the river is held by the Molyneux Electric Gold Dredging Company, Ltd., and the six miles below are held by Mr Nicholas Harliwich, of Roxburgh, and Mr Harman Reeves, of Dunedin. These two claims, comprising about 14. miles of river, were offered about a year ago to Messrs F. W. Payne and Son, of London. During the dredging boom of SO yeai-g ago several dredges •were operated on this stretch of river, and some of them gave weekly returns up to 400 oz. These dredges, however, were not powerful enough and did not have sufficiently long bucket ladders to work the river bed thoroughly, and when they did get to the • bottom good gold was found. It is stated that portions of the claims have never been dredged. In the opinion of certain mining experts, a large modern dredge working to a depth of 70 feet should secure good returns. TALISMAN DUBBO DIVIDEND (Special to Daily Times.)

AUCKLAND, March 14. A dividend of 10 per cent., equal to 6d a share, has been declared by the directors of the Talisman Dubbo Gold Mines, Ltd., and is payable on March 28. This is the second distribution by the company, a dividend of 3d a share having been paid in December. GOLDEN PLATEAU The management of Golden Plateau N.L. has received the following telegram, announcing the result of the company's first crushing:—"Crushed to March 3, four weeks' full time, 1620 tons for 24440 z fine gold." This excellent result, which is a fraction more than 30dwt a ton, promises well for the future of the mine, as large ore reserves are available, and it is hoped that the first crushing was truly representative of the. whole. Monthly clean-ups will be made and output will be maintained a,t about 500 tons a week. v BELL-KILGOUR REPORT The secretary of the Bell-Kilgour Gold Mining Company, Ltd., advises receipt of report from the manager, dated March 10, reading as follows: —The main drive was advanced 17 feet through heavy wash and boulders, a little coarse gold being secured. Straightened up north-east block near airway. Pair gold was obtained here, and then the men shifted to SC, where a little gold was secured for 20 feet of driving. South of 5A drove 15 feet alongside of old workings, heavy gold saved here. No. 3 shift drove 17 feet for fine gold. BELL-HOOPER REPORT The report of the Bell-Hooper mine for the week ended March 9 is as follows: —All the men were .engaged on blocking out, except two men engaged on a diversion drive. This drive commences at a point 10ft south of station 8, off the No. 1 main drive, and in a straight line to the intersection of the No. 1 cross drive east and the No. 3 north drive. The objective of this drive is to transfer the main outlet level of the mine to the eastern side of the present mine workings and so allow the completion of the blocking-out work on blocks O.P.N, and R., alongside the No. 1 main drive. Bloeking-out work was in progress in blocks S.R.L; and-Y. The contractor up to March 10 has completed a distance of 304 ft, giving a progress distance of 42ft for the week. The ground driven through still is hard, blue clay with no water soakage. Three men are employed on the excavation work and the building of a stone-breast work on the river front, preparatory work to the erection of the plant at the No. 2 tunnel. The gold return for the week was 51oz 7dwt 12gr. WORKSOP DREDGING COMPANY^ The contractors building the dredge for the Worksop Dredging Company report that at March 12 the chafing beams .had been fitted to the pontoon and a start made with the decking. KING SOLOMON DEEP LEAD The development of the north end of the mine has been steadily persevered with, and is proving payable'wash still to be making in that direction. The formation is irregular, the height of wash varying at different-points and the bottom changing from chippy rock, pug or sand alternately over_ short distances. Owing to this irregularity of the bottom, three pumps are being used in places that are being driven to the dip, but already there are indications that the true dip is being defined when it may become possible to work the one place to. the dip for drainage. _ Driving to the west is exposing a fair grade of wash. \ Bed rock has made its appearance in.the north-west of this section, and agdrive. has.been driven to the rise in thisTrock. In the end of this drive it is intended to put an up rise to the surface for ventilation and safety. Driving to the dip in the .south-west of the northern section ' has been discontinued. There is a nice body! of payable wash opened up for 50ft of its course from the main drive, but at the 50ft mark it pinched out in the deep ground. Blocking out was continuous in the eastern section. The Kaka water race has been cleaned out for three miles. Another mile of ditching will complete this part of the work, and 18 chains, of fluming will then be made to complete the whole work. This is a fine water right, and a valuable addition to the existing water system' of the company.

CHARLESTON SLUICING COMPANY In his report to the directors of the Charleston Sluicing Company, Ltd., .(or the fortnight ended March 10, the manager (Mr S t Powell) states that during the early part of the period there was a shortage of water, and as sluicing time was consequently limited, necessary repairs were carried out. Since March 6 sluicing has been continuous, except for about three hours a day, which was taken up with washing cloths. On March 3 a wash-up returned 18oz 16dwt of gold, but this return included a certain amount of gold recovered from the tunnel and some before Christmas. " Since installing the new rails and hopper," states Mr Powell, " it has enabled us to sluice longer hours and also treat a greater yardage per hour. I estimate we will treat from 7000 to 8000 yards a week. Our water supply is second to none in this district," and it is most uhusual to have such dry spells here as we have had since Christmas." NEW CORNISH POINT The following report, dated March 10, has been received from the mine manager of the New Cornish Point mine:— For the past week the tunnel has been advanced Oft, making the total distance 160 ft from No. 1 chain peg. The country being driven through is schist rock which is short grained and not so favourable for blasting aa formerly. At this point the tunnel is approximately four chains from where the first cross section was taken, thus allowing room for the old channel to have turned. If this is the case the drive should not carry far in the rock before breaking out again into the wash. Work has been carried on with two shifts, two men on each, up to Thursday last. Since then an additional shift has been put on in the face with the two men available frorri v the wash bin. The latter (with the exception of some finishing off work) is well underway towards completion. AUSTRALIAN COMPANIES DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED. Australian Knitting Mills, Ltd., has declared an interim dividend of Od a share on ordinary shares for the six months ended January 31 and an interim dividend of 3J per cent, nn preference shares for the six months ended December 31, both payable on March 29. MARKET FOR HIDES HIGHER PRICES EXPECTED. Reporting on the hide market under date February 1, W. i Weddel and Co., Ltd., London, states:—"Hides seem to be on a sound basis at present and it is very unlikely that any weakening in the markets will take place. There may be a few temporary setbacks, but the long view appears to favour higher prices in the coming months. Leather continues to sell very slowly without any advances being made. There arc at present rather big stocks of the heavier sole leather bends, the disposal of which is by no means easy, and pome anxiety is felt by the tanners. On the other hand, mediumweight bends for light sole leather are selling to advantage."
