INTOXICATED IN CAR
COLLISION WITH BRIDGE PILLAR NAVAL PETTY OFFICER FINED. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 14. Following a collision with the central pillar of the bridge over the Hutt road at Kaiwarra early this morning, the driver of the car, Jack Stephens Boyd, a petty officer on H.M.S. Diomecle, was charged before Mr E. Page, S.M., with being found intoxicated in charge of a car. He pleaded not guilty. The police stated that the car was considerably damaged, and that the accused, who was plainly under the influence of liquor, had to bo taken to hospital to have some stitches put in his head. They also said that three broken glasses were found in the car. For the defence it was stated that the accused bad been on duty all the previous night and was very tired. It was denied that there was any liquor in the car. The glasses had been there for months. The magistrate said that the accused was examined by three police officers and a doctor, and all expressed the view that he was intoxicated. Boyd was convicted and fined £lO.
