LIQUOR FOR AMERICA

LIFTING OF THE QUOTAS ABANDONMENT PROBABLE. NEW YORK, March 12, (Received May 13, at 5.5 p.m.) Informed quarters intimate that whereas the lifting of the liquor quotas for a period was ostensibly instituted to clarify the domestic liquor situation, there is another equally important side. It is indicated that the authorities also desire a “breather” before tackling the difficult problem of working out equitable trade arrangements with foreign countries. It is understood that the quota system may be altogether abandoned, but that the problem will be 1 attacked on a reciprocity basis under new r tariff arrangements which President Roosevelt is asking Congress to authorise. There is some belief also that the war debt problems will possibly be involved and that those nations having the least vulnerable position in their trade and other relations with America may obtain tariff concessions which would give them superior access to the American market. It is felt that Australia in this connection may have higher hopes for a favourable position with its wine exports. The situation, however, still continues in a highly fluid state.
