(Peb United Peeks Association.) AUCKLAND, March 13. Besides 18 applications to submit verbal evidence, 25 plans from the Auckland-dis-trict for monetary reform have been received by the Parliamentary Committee, which commenced its sittings this morning. The chairman (Mr J. A. Nash) said the commission hoped to finish the taking of evidence by the end of next week, when it would return to Wellington. STRATFORD, March 13. A suspicious fire in the Toko Hotel on Saturday had a sequel in the Police Court to-day, when Douglas Fraser, a farm hand, was charged with arson. The accused admitted the offence, saying that he set fire to the lavatory to “ get one back ” on the licensee, who refused him any more drink. Ho made a statement to the police to that effect. The accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Wellington Supreme Court for sentence. BLENHEIM, March 13. CHRISTCHURCH, March 13. Owing to a heavy southerly storm on the coast the interisland steamer Rangatira was an hour late in arriving at Lyttelton from Wellington this morning. An investigation into the finances of the Christchurch Tramways will be undertaken at the request of the Tramways Board by Mr James Anderson, formerly city treasurer, and Mr H. A. C. North, public accountant. The purpose of the investigation is to inform the board whether it can safely avoid striking a tramway rate.
