NEW GUINEA NATIVES
ATTACK BY POUCE V A DESPERATE ENCOUNTER. SYDNEY, March 3. A message to the Telegraph from Rabaul states that 19 natives were killed and 17 wounded in a desperate fight with a police party under District Officer Taylor, who with three native police boys suffered Arrow wounds. The police party was endeavouring to apprehend the murderers of Bernard M'Grath, who was killed on -the Warumantina River on February 17. On the 22nd, with another party, led by Cadet Atchison, they met the natives, who resisted for six hours in their stronghold, after which they were overcome, the survivors surrendering.
The conditions are now practically normal. The result of the encounter is expected to decrease the danger in this area, which, however, is officially uncontrolled, and white men enter it at their own risk.
