SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.
PORT CHALMERS, March 4. Nine vessels of considerable tonnage arrived in port to-day, bringing an aggregate of 1420 passengers. So far as we have heard there was no personal injury sustained in any of the mishaps which occurred to parties in vehicles on the way- to tlie Racecourse yesterday; although gome of those who met with break-downs found themselves 'awkwardly fixed, and were mercilessly "rigged" bv the more fortunate passers. •But the return journey in the evening was marked by at least one rather serious accident. A " trap " containing two women and a man, who wag driving, was, as we hear, coming very carefully and slowly down the hill above the Robin Hood Hotel; but it was struck by a following vehicle, the horse of which had bolted, and was knocked bodily over the steep embankment, close to the edge of which it had been drawn for safety. One of the women had her ankle dislocated, the small bone of the leg fractured, and a good deal bruised and cut. The other was much knocked about, but suffered no fracture or dislocation, we believe; and the driver escaped the least injured of the three. The women were got up to the road again and conveyed home., The people of Hawke's Bay are industriously prosecuting the search for gold in tliat Province. It appears that an attempt has been made to engage the services of an experienced miner from Otago, but the sum of money collected for the purpose was found to be in-j sufficient. . . .
