TAIERI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

. AUTUMN .SHOW, '■ The entries for the autumn show, of the Taieri Horticultural Society, held on Saturday in the Coronation Hall, ftlosgiel, were larger than thbse of lastytaT, and the exhibition reflected credit on the town and district. Mr Tannock (Dunedih), who was jud&e, said the gardeners were evidently well up to date in flowers. There. Was a wonderful Variety on the tables, featuring practically e v ery flower to be found in gardens, and the conv petition was keen. The blooms were CJean, bright, and fresh, and showed, little indication of unfavourable weather. The asters wei-e a particularly good class, and the task of selecting the winners was not an easy one. Sweet peas, though good, were-Tiot up to exhibition standard. In fact, it was ■ evident that the flowers had not been grown for but" for the beautifying of garden plots. The pot plant section was.good, an outstanding ' exhibit being >'a giant aurelia, the property of Mr R..M. Greaves. . . - i Fruit of all kinds was well represented, even to an exhibit of'red currants by Mr T. Burns, of Gladstone toad;- Thefcpoking apples; were a'• nicie even lot; and. the fruit in general was. entirely, free from pests or'.disease.' '■■../'■■■. .:■'., '.';,: i'' ".;■'■::,''.!-■'■

In the" vegetable section there were outstanding exhibits in potatoes, parsnips, carrots, onions, marrows, and cabbages. As the judge remarked, the lbcal, soil must be exceptionally, good to grow such, vegetables.. ' , ■ ' The decorative wotk was judged by. Miss Sriiaill (Dunediri), who ppoke vih terms of. the 'highest, praise of-the'novel ideas, thei beautiful tints used, and the colouring. This section' "would ;■ compare favourably with any Jn 'the larger centres. Mrs Pilling judged the .collections of jams, .preserves, etc..,",and here the entries wkere in keeping with the high \standard set in the others; '. •...». Mr Pilling. (president.) and Miss R. Pearson :■ (secretary) 4 rendered, willing service throughout the day. Mr A.,. E: Ahsell, M.P., was present, during the afternoon. i The; following, is -the list of POT PLANTS.
