DOMINION TOURNAMENT RINKS COMPETITION POST-SECTION PLAY Three rounds of post-section play in , the Rinks Competition were completed in the New Zealand Bowling Associations’ championship tournament yesterday. The weather was warm and sunny throughout the day, but a tricky south-west wind made accurate play difficult. Three greens were used, 29 rinks being in the competition, which was on the two-life system, at the start of the day’s play, and after the completion of the three rounds three two-liters and 13 one-lifers remain in the contest. Veitch (West Harbour) met Lambeth (Balmacewen) in the first round on the Dunedin green, and won- by 23 points to 14. After the eleventh head he took seven of the, next eight heads, giving Lambeth no chance., Deare (Dunedin) easily accounted for Armstrong (Leith), ajd scored fours on no fewer than four heads. Martin (Sumner) was level with Healey (Waimate) on the fifteenth head, and then gained a four, leading by 14 points to 10. Healey, however, scored 1,4, 1, 2 on the next four heads, aud won by 18 points to 15. Muston (Carlton) and Bandy (Papanui) played a very close game. Bandy was leading by 13 points to 9 on the thirteenth head, but Muston collected a total of seven points on the next four heads. Bandy took .the next two heads, and led by 17 points to 16, but on the twentieth Muston equalised. In an interesting finish Muston secured a brace on the last head to win the game. In the second round interest centred particularly in the game between Deare and MacGillivray (Roslyn), who bad had a bye in the first round. It was an extremely close struggle. Deare led by 10 points to 9 after 11 heads had been played, but MacGillivray then secured a four. Deare replied .with a similar score, and was again one point in the lead. With 17 heads played the scores were even, 16 all, but MacGillivray again took the lead with a brace. Deare followed with two singles to equalise the scores on the twentieth head. On the last head Deare played excellently to draw the shot when tiie kitty had been run into the ditch, and won an exciting game by 19 points to 18. In his game with Healey, Muston led by 7 points to 6, with eight. heads played, but Healey monopolised the scoring on the next heads, and led by 19 points to 7. Muston put up a strong fight, and after taking singles from the next three heads lost the nineteenth. On the twentieth, however, he scored a six, and required four on the last head to tit. He could not score more than one, and lost the game. , . - Lambeth was more than a match for Armstrong and Bandy eliminated Martin by defeating him by 24 points to 14 4 large crowd gathered to watch the game between Veitch and Deare in the third round. Dunedin drew five shots on Se fifth head, but West Harbour took the next three to lead by 9 points to 7. Deare equalised on the tenth head, and then scored a brace. He was lying three

shots on the twelfth head when Veitch trailed the kitty with a great shot, and scored a four. Again Deare drew level with a brace, but Veitch followed with two singles. When Dunedin scored two on the sixteenth head the scores were again even, but on the next head Veitch again drove to get three shots. On the next two heads each player scored a single,'but Veitch added a brace to lead by 21 points to 16 on the twentieth head. Deare could manage to get only three on the last, and thus lost the game. In this round Lambeth, a one-lifer, defeated Healey, a two-lifer, after an exciting finish. Healey had the better of the opening stages, and led by 9 points to 4 with seven heads played. Lambeth equalised by taking the next four heads, but Healey then secured a lead which he maintained until the twentieth head, when he led by 16 points to 15. Lambeth then drew the shot when the kitty had been run into the ditch by his third, and the were equal on the last head. On the extra head Lambeth scored a single to win the game. In this round Bandy eliminated MacGillivray, establishing an early lead-and holding tlie upper hand throughout to win by the" substantial margin of 25 points to 12. CALEDONIAN GREEN. In the first round of play on the Caledonian green, Barnett (Roslyn) was defeated by Whibley (Greymouth). After 12 heads had been played the scores were 11 all, and Barnett then went into the lead with a single. The Greymouth rink, however, did some remarkable scoring on the next five heads, leading by 12 points. Barnett secured two singles, but was 10 points behind at the finish. ’ Dovereux (Kaikorai) secured a 5. on the third head in his game • with Thomson (Phoenix), and after 10 heads had been played led by 15 points to 2. Thomson made a remarkable recovery, allowing Kaikorai to score on only three subsequent heads, and was only three points behind when the game ended. In the same round, Grenfell (Phoenix) monopolised the scoring in a remarkable manner in the early stages of his game with Stevenson (Invercargill), and with only 10 heads gone led by 23 points to 1. Stevenson, too, made a remarkable recovery, and allowed Grenfell to score on only two subsequent heads, the game ending on the twentieth head with the scores 26—15 in Grenfell’s favour. Grenfell, however, lost his next two games, and was eliminated. Walker (Auckland) and Anderson (1 imam), each of whom lost only one game in the section play, met in the first round on this green. Walker gaming a comfortable win by 18 points to 12. In M alkcr s next game with Grenfell the scores were 15 all with 17 heads played. In the first round of play on the Kaituna green Harraway (Dunedin) defeated Claridge (Caledonian). The Dunedin man led by 20 points to 10 on the seventeenth head after taking six successive heads. Claridge finished well by taking the last four heads, and was only 2 points behind at the finish.j . The Cromwell rink, skipped by Wilkinson, also won in this round, leading at every stage to defeat Gilbert (Karori) by 19 points to 14. Adess (St. Kilda) was beaten by Shepherd (Kaituna), who led after eight beads by 13 points to 1. Adess recovered, and at the twentieth head was only two points behind. Shepherd, however, secured a single, and won the game. . In the next round Harraway again secured a comfortable win against Dec (Nelson). Ho was leading by 16 points to 13 on the nineteenth head, and then scored a 0. , Wilkinson’s win against Shepherd was due to his strong play in the early stages of the game. Gilbert met Adess in this round, and after 12 heads had been played the scores were 10 all. Gilbert then ran away from his opponent, who subsequently scored only a single, and the Karori representative won hy 23 points to 11. In the game between Claridge and Currie (Timaru) Caledonian opened witn a 5, and led by 11 points to 2 after six heads had. been played. Currie then took the next six heads, and led by 12 points to 11. The next eight heads, however, were all won by Claridge, the final score being Claridge 23, Currie 12. Currie and Adess were eliminated. Harraway and Wilkinson, both two lifers, met in the third round. The Dunedin man continued to show good lorm, hut Wilkinson held his own until the thirteenth head, when the scores were 10 all, Harraway then embarked on some tall scoring, and on successive heads scored 3,2 3,4, and finally won by the substantial margin of 23 points to 12. Dee had an easy win against Shepherd, taking seven of the first ninfe heads lo lead by 13 points'to 2. Shepherd then (flayed hotter, but Dec ran away from him in the finish, and won by 23 points to 10. Muston (Carlton), who had been transferred from the Dunedin green, was never troubled in his game with Grenfell (Phoenix), who had been transferred from the Caledonian green, and won by 19 points to 10. PRESIDENT’S DAY Yesterday was “president’s day” at the Dunedin green, where visiting and local howlers and their wives were the guests of the president of the New Zealand Bowling Association (Air H. RowIcy) and Mrs Rowley. The occasion attracted a largo attendance, those present lining entertained at afternoon tea in the pavilion, which was attractively decorated. During an interval in the play Mv Rowley extended a hearty welcome to those present, and expressed his gratitude to those who had assisted in making the tournament an outstanding success.
