BAGPIPE MUSIC

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Allow me as an Alexandra reader to thank your correspondent “ Ghillie Galium” for hie congratulations to the Alexandra Sports Committee, and at the same time I would point out that “ Ghillie Galium” is still evidently suffering from his Hogmanay celebrations. His suggestion anent the competition to find the champion piper is' quite a good one, but unfortunately he has not been able to see-past his own backyard. If the competition were held in Dunedin it would be a commonplace affair and would be passed over or forgotten in a few days. Now, if “ Ghillie Galium ” was a little more broad-minded and less selfish. he would have suggested that the competition be held at Alexandra, and the result would become of world-wide importance as shown by the great amount of interest displayed in a slight slip of the pen of a report of the Alexandra Sports. I would draw the attention of “ Ghillie Galium ” to the fact that it was a Dunedin newspaper which gave to Alexandra the great privilege of having champion pipers at the sports, and not the Alexandra newspaper. We are not precocious in Alexandra as a rule. — I am, etc., Interested. Alexandra, January 15. [This correspondence is closed. The apparently innocuous letter, which originated it, would not have been inserted if we had had any reason to suppose that it would have excited the display of bitterness and jealousy that has followed the publication of it. — Ed., O.D.T.]
