Smith,’-528 Leith street, Dunedin, wrpte asking the council to clear away by unemployed labour some of the debris in the creek at his property, Macandrew Bay. He also suggested, in view of the . damage done to his property during the last flood that in place of the three pipes leading through Princes street from Mr Riddell’s property to his own a four-square culvert was required in order to carry the debris that came down the creek in flood time., —lt was decided that a letter be‘ sent saying that the. matter would be investigated by the engineer,/ An application for a suitable entrance to Mrs R. Hadlee’s cottage at Company Bay was made.—lt was decided that the work be done when men were available.

At an approximate'cost of £2 it was decided to have the road in front of the Council Chambers tar-sealed. As it was anticipated that there would be increased traffic on the main highways during the holiday season, the Main Highways Board wrote that, in accordance with the practice of previous years, it desired surfacemen to remain on duty during the holidays./ This would ensure adequate grading being done in order to maintain reasonable travelling conditions and to protect the surfaces. — The county engineer reported that a grader would be engaged throughout the holiday period. Notification was received from the commissioner of Grown Lands that the control of the Titeremoana scenic, reserve had been vested in the council.— Received. - i. PETITION FROM STAFF. Ten members of the council’s road staff petitioned that the question of granting pay during the Christmas holidays be reviewed, as the stoppage of pay during this period placed a particularly severe strain on their resources, and also that consideration be given to the restoration of the wage cuts, for it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a reasonable standard of existence. The county clerk stated that the road staff received six days’ holidays each year, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. A sum of £lB was involved. V Cr Nyhon considered that since the unemployed would receive a fortnight’s holiday pay the men should be paid. He moved that wages be paid.for the three days,—This was seconded by Cr. Bruntoxu

Cr Edmonds questioned whether the motion was in order. There was already a motion on the books which debarred the council from interfering with holidays for 'l2 ! months. This view was supported by a number of councillors. The chairman read a clause from the council’s standing orders dealing, with extraordinary business. Stating that it -.was,.apparent; that .the general wish was that the ..application be declined, he .ruled ’ that the matter -was extraordinafy business, and "therefore could not be discussed unless notice of motion were given. ,* In reference'to the application lor the restoration of the cut in wages, Cr Irvine pointed out that this cpuld not ■bo considered until the close of the financial year in March., ,f‘ It would be unwise to consider the matter,” said Cr Nyhon. “The men are being paid plenty considering the way things are.” ’ The opinion was expressed by Cr Brunton that the council was paying better wages than any other council. Cr .Nyhon: There is no question of any increase. ' ' - . TJie county clerk,: inquired if it would be any use. thfe itaff making further application’for the holiday pay t. It. was pointed out that if it waa desired to pursue the matter further any councillor .copld-; give notice to rescind the motion , .at ‘ " present on the books. —The chairman then declared the business closed.
