SCHOOL CRICKET

GAMES IN OAMARU SOUTHLAND v. WAUAKI The annual match between the Southland and Waitaki Boys’ High Schools was commenced at Waitaki grounds yesterday. Conditions were ideal, the wicket being fast and true, and the outfield perfect. Southland won the toss, and batted first with Spence and Carswell facing the bowling of Dick and Smith. Spence placed Dick’s first ball nicely through the gully to the boundary, and Smith opened; with a maiden. Both batsmen were scor-' ing well, when Carswell went Ibw to Dick, with the score at 25. Lee joined Spence, 'f who, with his score at 15, was clean bowled by Smith. Uttley began confidently, but also found Smith troublesome, eventually , going Ibw to this bowler for 11. Chater tbok up the bowling at Dick’s end, but waa replaced by Holloway after two overs. Shortly after, Campbell was caught by Kerr off Smith, the latter having taken three wickets for 15 runs at this stage. G Anderson just reached double figures when he was caught by M'Kay off Holloway, the score board reading five for 76. Lee and ‘ Pollock settled down to a good partnership, the former doing most of the ■coring. He reached 50 after just over an hour’s batting. M'Kay relieved Holloway at the top end, and Dick and Smith alternated at the south end. The lunch adjournment saw Lee end Pollock still batting nicely, the partnership lasting 45 minutes and producing 64 runs. On resumption, Dcnsem took up the bowling, but both batsmen continued to . score freely, Lee reaching his century in 138 minutes, to be caught behind the wickets by Gordon off Dick. The partnership had lasted 96 minutes, and had produced 132 runs. P, Anderson joined Pollock, who was caught by Rendle off Smith after a useful contribution of 39 runs. Kerr and Rendle opened for Waitaki at 3 p.m. to the bowling of Uttley and Warburton, 10 runs coming from the first two overs. -‘At 24 Rendle was clean bowled by Warburton for seven. Smith joined Kerr, and the pair took the score ’to 42 before Kerr was dismissed by Uttley after scoring 27. _ Dick and - Smith became associated in a bright ' partnership, the half-century being reached after 46 minutes’ batting. Uttley and Warburton were both using the leg trap, but the batsmen were placing well and securing smart singles. Carswell replaced Uttley at the south, end and Spence replaced Warburton. Dick sent away & nice boundary to the leg, and Smith placed a pretty shot through the slips to the‘boundary. Uttley took over the howling again, but Dick scored a good boundary, followed by a 3 through the ■- slip*; but he wag clean bowled with his score at 30. The partnership had produced 57 runs in 41 minutes. M’Kay • joined Smith, and the century was put up lifter 84 minutes of play. -Smith reached the half-century in 90 minutes, but the light was becoming poor. MKay was well caught by Uttley otf Campbell, having made 21. Gordon and Densem went cheaply, Gowland and Smith being undefeated at stumps with the total at 183 for six wickets. ST. KEVIN’S v. M'GLASHAN i ■ /. . ' The fourth annual fixture between the St. Kevin’s College and M'Glashan (Dunedin) first elevens was played at Redcastle grounds yesterday.. , The wicket, which favoured the bowlers, was in perfect order, and the outfield was fairly fast. M'Glashan batted first, and was all out for 74 runs. The visitors were not used to the somewhat slow wicket, and the wickets fell cheaply, Fraser was the only batsman to make a stand, batting for an hour to obtain his 24 runs. C. Stewart, with 12 runs, was the only other batsman to reach double figures. The St. Kevin's bowling was particularly accurate, Cahill, Egan, and Kean being most effective with the ball. At one stage M'Glashan had lost four wickets for 9 runs. * St. : Kevin’s opened badly, the first three batsmen securing 15 runs among them. However; Cahill and Fitzgerald stopped th« rot, the former making a valuable 37 and the latter batting well for 23.
