Hi “The Book In the Making" (Is 9d net) Mr Stanley Unwin, of the wellknown London publishing firm, provides an interesting account of the process of the manufacture of a work from the time when it is submitted to a publisher, and referred to his reader, to that happy moment when it emerges complete with an appropriate jacket. Mr Unwin’s lecture, which was given at the Stationers Hall, is thorough, and the technical processes of book-production are dealt with lucidly in non-technical language, but it does not lack humour. It should be read by all persons with literary aspirations, if only for Mr Unwin’s assurance that reputable publishers examine all MSS. submitted. (Allen and Unwin, Ltd.) Splendid reproductions of photographs of modern interiors, of Australian gardens, and the beauties of Dunk Island, in North Queensland, are featured in the November issue of the Home, published by Art In Australia, Ltd. The magazine has the usual content of bright articles, notes, and special pages of interest to women readers. The Australian Museum Magazine, October-December, inaugurates with this number a series of covers in four colours, the first being a study of scarlet honeyeaters by Lilian Medland. The articles include m description by T. Hedge-Smith of n series, of Broken Hill minerals recently acquired by the museum; an account of primitive flake instruments and of Benjamin Harrison, who first discovered their significance; and discussions of the coral reefs of the Great Barrier, of poisonous spiders and methods of combating the depredations of house insects. Prom J. ■A. Allen and Co.; of Grenville street, W.C. 1, comes a catalogue of the sporting books, including those relating to indoor pastimes, held in stock.
