RELIEF WORK AT SAWYERS’ BAY

■. '. f; TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—There is a general complaint in Sawyers’ Bay regarding relief work being granted to persons who can afford to pay a man to dig their gardens and work in glasshouses on their stand-down week. These men with the big glasshouses have three days in every week, and one week in every four off work. Now, if these gardens require all this labour, there is more to be made from them than entitles these men to relief work. If a man cannot look after his own garden, then he has no right to relief work.—l am, etc., , A Passer-by. [The above letter was referred to the Unemployment Committee, which informs us that when any cases such as is mentioned by our correspondent comes to the knowledge of the committee full inquiries are made and the cases dealt with.— Ed., O.D.T.] «
