DUNEDIN SHAKESPEARE CLUB
READING OF “KING JOHN” From the historical drama “King John” better than any other we learn how the greatest of dramatic poets dealt wit!) dramatic material which came to his hand. We have the King, who more than any other of Shakespeare’s kings of England unites weakness with wickedness; Cardinal Pandulph, representative of the power and policy of Rome; Faulconbridge, representative of English courage, manliness, tenderness, and humour; Constance, the afflicted mother, and Her gentle Arthur —these are eminently dramatic figures, and it is on these that Shakespeare expends the energy of his imagination. The \:)lay gives scope for powerful and moving work on the part of the artists concerned and with a cast composed of the following members, the Shakespeare’s Club should give a good account of itself on Tuesday next:—Messrs F. J. Gair, J. Fleming, H. W. Hunter, H. Chapman, N. M‘Kinlay, A. G. Fleming, M. Gaston, R. Herbert, S. G. Loche, B. E. Dickinson, D. E. Dali; Misses H. M‘Rao, Heather Smith, Isobel M'Gregor, Florence Sumner, and Mrs Withers.
