RIFLE SHOOTING

HIGH SCHOOL, v. OLD BOYS,

The annual rifle match between old boys and present boys of the Otago High School was fired at the Pelichet-Bay range yesterday afternoon in fine weather, although the light was dull towards the conclusion of the match. Seven shots, with two optional sighters, were fired at 200 and 500 yards. The members of the Old Boys’, team,, whose average age was 68 years six months, handicapped themselves on account of the advantage of aperture sights by firing 10 men against the School’s 11. Although the present boys had a slight lead at the shorter range, some of the more inexperienced members of their team found the longer range troublesome and the Old Boys proved the winners by the narrow margin of six points. Some good scores were returned at both ranges, possibles being put up at 200 yards by Rifleman J. W. Murdoch and Captain A. J. S. Cowie of the Old Boys’ team, and at 500 yards by Rifleman Murdoch and by Q.M.S. J. F. Moodie, of the School team. In the individual scoring, Rifleman Murdoch’s record store of 70 took pride of place, while Q.M.S. Moodie was a good second with a total of 08. The following are the scores:— OLD BOYS’’ TEAM.

Interested spectators at the match Were Messrs J. J. Mallard, E. Webster, and J. C. H. Somerville, while Riflemen R. A. Maekie and R. H. Smith, of the Dunedin Rifle Club, gave able and valued assistance.
