DUNEDIN GARDENING CLUB
The Dunedin Gardening Club met on Tuesday evening, when there was a record attendance to hear Mr Tait, of the .Oamaru Botanic Gardens, give an account of his visit to the Homeland and what he saw of the horticultural world there. He illustrated his remarks with well-chosen and beautiful lantern slides. He drew attention to the public parks in the large cities, such as London, Manchester, and Glasgow, _ All the large cities were well supplied with parks and open spaces, and very large sums were spent on their upkeep. Some of the parks were very beautiful, and a high standard ot horticulture was continually maintained. Trees were quite a feature in the parks and streets, as also were the grass lawns. He also dealt with a few of the public buildings, showing some fine examples. Mr Tait visited quite a number of the horticultural shows, amongst which was Southport. This is the largest show in Britain. It is an annual show, run by the corporation, and a large expendituie is incurred both by the exhibitors and the corporation. The attendance was well over 100,000. The" show consisted, in addition to the usual competitions, of gardens, rock gardens, and water gardens, these being erected at great expense. _ He also visited some of, the' famous private gardens, and he illustrated these with photographs taken by himself. Mr Tait also showed views of the gardens in the lake district in England, and the lochs ot Scotland, and also the beautiful roadways and bridges. The population in the large towns was immense, but the people seemed to be content and happy, and did not bother very much about the depression. At the conclusion the chairman (Mr F. H Hollingworth) thanked Mr Tait on behalf of the club for his very interesting talk and the beautiful views, and stated that the club was deeply indebted to him for coming from Oamaru. Mr Simpson controlled the lantern in his usual efficient way.
