MAGISTRATE’S COURT At a sitting of the Port Chalmers Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, before Mr J. E. Bartholomew, S.M., Carmelo Antonio Jacalone was charged with cutting and destroying two manuka trees on the Borough Council’s reserve at the new cemetery. The police evidence was to the effect that the borough foreman visited the reserve on the morning of October 31, and saw the defendant cutting up two manuka trees. Jacalono had been spoken to and warned previously by the foreman.—ln reply to a question by the magistrate the defendant said he had been warned about cutting down pjnc trees, but was not warned about interfering with manuka trees. — The magistrate said that ns the defendant was only 'a youth he did not wish to inflict a fine, but Jacalone must take due warning that trees on borough reserves must not bo interfered with. He would be convicted and ordered to come before the court for sentence in six months if called upon. UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE A meeting of the Port Chalmers Unemployment Committee was held on Thursday afternoon, Mr A. Campbell presiding. The Unemployment Board, Wellington, advised that relief workers would be, paid without working for two weeks at the Christmas-New Year season, provided neither week was stand-down week. Provision was made for arranging that stand-down week should not fall in that fortnight, and it was reported that the local Relief Workers’ Association had arranged accordingly. A letter was received from the relief workers at Sawyers’ Bay complaining about recent short allotments. The committee was asked to make representations to the Unemployment; Board, and it was decided to make inquiries. The registration of a married man was approved. Routine business occupied the committee for the greater part of the session. Several matters wore discussed in committee.
