THE BUILDING PROGRAMME

:UP TO TREATY LIMITS,

WASHINGTON, September 20,

President Roosevelt announced to-day that he intends to proceed without restriction on the 238,000,000 dollar programme to build the United States Navy up to treaty limits. Reports * have been current from abroad that suggestions have been made to the United States Ambassador and Mr Davis in London that there be some abandonment or curtailment of the programme. It 'was asserted at White, House that no such suggestion had been actually received by the President himself.

President Roosevelt stated that contracts had been let, and under no circumstances was there any intention of calling hack the contracts or altering the plans.

It is emphasised that the Administration has no intention of abandoning any portion of the new building programme, which will be pushed forward as part of the. industrial recovery plans to stimulate employment.
