ROSLYN AND KAIKORAI RATEPAYERS

ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The annual meeting of the Roslyu and Kaikorai Ratepayers’ Association was held last evening, the president (Mr P. L. Ritchie) being in the chair. There was a fair attendance of members. ANNUAL REPORT. The association’s annual report stated that the beautifying and practical improvements made in the district in the course of the past nine years had been of exceptional value to every citizen, and great credit was due to the City Council for its co-operation with the association. During that period the association had acted as the ratepayers’ special representative to the City Council in pointing out works and improvements that should be made to meet the requirements of the district with profit, safety, and comfort to residents, at the same_ time receiving the greater revenue accruing to the city as a whole. It was likewise pleasing to record the amicable and pleasant relations that had always existed between members of the City Council and the association. The association’s requests during the year had been varied in character, but not at any time had they been of an extravagant nature, the association being satisfied during the financial stress to ask only for things that were well deserved. Patience, forbearance, and perseverance had been of value in getting things done. At the same time the association invariably found that the City Council in its wisdom added to and completed even more than what was asked for, and for this the association was grateful. Reviewing works that were m suspense in the last year’s report, the only two items therein that were still not done were the Hill-Jack block widening of Highgate, and the widening of the Kaikorai Valley road. These two, unfortunately, had been held up through want of funds to pay for the land required, although the latter had made a certain amount of, progress. One of the big achievements of the year had been the completion of the surface drainage, of Highgate, Ann, and Hereford streets into the Taieri road new drain, thus saving the Kaikorai Valley road from it s usual flooding from these areas during heavy rainfalls. Other works completed during the year were:— I Tar-sealing from Town Belt to the Rectory right-of-way in Littlebourne road, where the bend had been raised and made safe for motor traffic, and extra street lighting installed; regrading corner of Wallace and Melrose streets; rounding off and widening the corner of the road at the foot of Leven street; regrading of the corner opposite Scarba street; widening Highgate at corner of Oban street; erecting larger tramway waiting shed in Rnss street; widening the south side of City road to Charlotte street; widening Highgate at Dunottar; ■ rearranging and improving street lighting in Highgate from School street to Dunottar; construction of kerbing and channelling on east side of Helensburgh road, Taieri road, and Shetland street; widening of Taieri road iiorth side up to Dean street; filling in and reforming Dean street with drainage of creek; continued widening of Kaikorai Valley road: widening Taieri road, opposite Walton street for formation in correct level near this intersection; cutting back various hedges growing on street frontages; regrading School street; portion of Ross street, through iown Belt, above cable car and electric car junction was widened about six feet; tarsealing footpath in Tyne street; making pew roadway round portions washed away by flood waters in Fraser’s Gully, thus completing the walk right through this beautiful bush; cleaning out ■ Kaikorai Stream by residents concerned; new formation uniting Dale street with Jackson street. The sum of £l4 was expended on repairs to the Kaikorai Baths during the year. In last report mention was made that the Tramways Department was looking into the proposition of a trackless tram service on the Highgate-Maori Hill section. Since then the extra taxation on running costs with the high exchange in importing these cars and accessories .had made it. at least for the present, a proposition not to be entertained. Carriageways top-dressed with tar and bitumen in Roslyn district were 3184 square yards during the year, while footpaths were 21,596 square yards, while the Roslyu quarry produced 11,500 cubic yards of material. A new sports house and convenience had now been erected at Ellis Park. This recreation area, which was ideally situated for the convenience of residents,,, was beginning to take final shape. Owing to the natural gradient the playing areas had been laid off at three levels and when the whole work had been completed a very fine and commodious ground would be added to the growing list of city recreation areas. In moving the adoption of the report the chairman said it indicated consideiv able progress during the year. The undertakings were numerous and varied nnd success had largely attended their requests. The executive had secured a number of prominent works and thanks were owing to the City Council in these difficult financial times for supporting the association so well. The association had now arrived at the end of its ninth year and he thought it had justified its existence in the advancement to the many up-to-date privileges the district now enjoyed. He eulogised the splendid services of the secretary (Mr A. D. Sutherland) and the executive for its co-opera-tion and help. The motion was seconded by Mr A. Ellis and carried. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
