HIGH SCHOOLS’ BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools’ Board was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Dr G. E. Thompson (chairman), the Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox), and Archdeacon Fitchett, Dr Lawson, and Messrs J. J. Mallard, D. T. Fleming, J. C. Stephens, W. R. Brugh, and Mrs S. M. Park. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr Morrell, rector of .the Boys’ School, whose daughter had died on the previous day. Accounts amounting to £1756 Is 3d were passed for payment. A letter was received from the rector accepting the board’s invitation to give an address and present the prizes at the 1933 breaking-up ceremony of the Boys’ School. A letter was received from the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce stating that, following its usual custom, it would present £3 3s to the Otago Boys’ High School for prizes in commercial subjects.—Received with thanks. RECTOR’S REPORT. The rector of the Boys’ School reported as follows under date September 15:— The school duly reassembled on Tuesday, September 12. The total number of boys now on the roll is 695, of whom 294 are seniors, 388 juniors, and 13 paying pupils. The corresponding totals for September, 1928-32 are, respectively, 681, 662, 677, 746, and 718. The number of boys leaving during or at the end of last term was 42 (32 of them from senior forms), against 53 in the second term of 1932. Of the 42 leaving, 36 have obtained employment, and five are continuing studies elsewhere. The annual football tournament with the Christchurch, Timaru, and Southland High Schools, played at Christchurch on Friday and Monday, August 18 and 21, resulted, after close contests, in a win for the school team, who defeated Christchurch B—s and Timaru 6—3. The visit was much enjoyed by our boys, and the hospitality shown is greatly appreciated. The First XV has. won 14 matches this season out of 15 played, losing only to Christ’s College, and again holds the local Third Grade championship. The Association boys during the holidays, received a return visit from senior and junior XI s of Greyraouth secondary schools, winning both matches. The First XI is shortly, to play off a tie for the Fourth Grade championship of the Otago Football Association. The hockey XI has also done well, again holding the Third Grade championship of the Hockey Association. On the motion of Mr Mallard it was decided to congratulate the pupils and the masters on the success achieved in the various events. The report was adopted. LADY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The principal of the Girls’ School, Miss M, H. M. King, reported as follows under date September 14:— The roll at date is as follows:—Senior free places, 155; junior free places, 364; paying pupils 3—total, 522. The roll number on September, 1932, wag 545; 1931, 477; 1930, 447; 1929, 421, The school reopened for the current term on the date fixed, and the work of the classes proceeds as usual. Miss Laweon is absent through serious illness, and Miss D. Hayward has been selected, with the approval of the chairman, to take her place in the meantime. The members of the staff and the pupils unite to express sympathy with Miss Lawson, and 1 greatly regret the unavoidable loss of her services just at the time of, year when the work of the classes is being brought to its climax. We hope, however, that her health, which has been far from good for some time, will be permanently improved. The report was adopted.
