SHEEP WORRYING
TO THE EDITOR.
Sib, —What a pity a writer like “Disgusted ” is not a farmer with a few experiences like mine in connection with useless, starving, mongrel dogs amongst his sheep at this season of the year when they are lambing! On three different occasions a relief worker’s dog worried my sheep. It had previously even worried his own pet lamb. It might have interested “ Disgusted ” to see the stomach of a sheep (still alive) lying nearly two chains away from it—the effect of the worrying by this relief worker’s dog. When I remonstrated with the owner all he said was that “ hie dog was a better-bred dog than any of mine, and he would not destroy it.”
No doubt the indiscriminate poisoning of dogs on a public road is, a reprehensible act, of which no reputable farmer would be guilty, but the ownership of wandering, starving mongrels is a matter that should receive the attention of county councils, and permission should be given to shoot them at sight. I am, etc., Another Disgusted Person.
