HOCKEY NOTES

By Watcher,

After a very fine game, when good hockey was the order of the day, Athletic (Oamaru) defeated West Harbour (Dunedin) in the match played at King George’s Park for the Richardson-Benson Cup by the margin of three goals to nil. Ravensbourne put up a great fight, and lack of finish in the forwards was no doubt responsible for the score not being more even. Athletic , thus retains the cup, but Ravensbourne should not be downhearted, as it is sure to be the possessor of the trophy before many seasons are past.- In the final game of the Waitaki Ladies’ Sub-association’s competition, played at Kurow on Saturday last, Windsor A defeated Huia A by two goals to one. The result of this match places Windsor in _ the leading position of the competition. It has come to the notice of the writer that the referees in this match changed ends at half time, and this is contrary to rules. On no account must referees change ends during any stage of the game. Windsor has received excellent entries for its seyen-a-side tournament to take place at: Windsor on Saturday, commencing _at 12 o’clock. Six entries have been received .for the senior section and ten for the junior. Included in the entries are teams from Ranfurly and Wedderburn, and the presence of these teams should create increased interest in the tournament. Large entries are expected by the local association for its annual 11-a-side tournament (sealed' handicap), to be held at King George’s Park on September; 30. Several outside teams from Dunedin, Timaru, and Central Otago, are expected to be amongst the entries received. All teams participating are assured of at least three games, and the weaker teams will receive the assistance of the handicaps. An excellent day’s hockey should result for all teams taking part. The tournament will be followed up by the association’s annual plain and fancy dress ball to be held in the Drill Hall,' when the presentation of trophies will be made. The Pirata Club had a very successful trip on Saturday last, teams journeying to both Palmerston and Waikouaiti. At Palmerston the local team secured a win by 3 goals to 1, and at Waikouaiti, Pirata was also successful by 2 goals to 1. Members of the club thoroughly enjoyed the day s outing, and greatly, appreciated the hospitality extended to them. MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE. Points. Ch.

On Saturday Oamaru meets Rovers, and should the former be successful it will be the final match of the competition, as the result of the game then remaining to be played (Totara v. Rovers) would have no bearing on the placing of the teams in the competition points. date has yet been received from the South Canterbury Association for the match between the winnine club teams of Timaru and Oamaru for the Walker-Hall Shield. As the season is nearing a close, it is to be hoped that there will he no delay in playing ptt this match. The writer extends congratulations to D. Taylor and E. Brown, of the Oamaru Club, on gaming inclusion in the Otago team to play South Canterbury at Timaru on Saturday, and also to J. Dmasay, of the Totara Club, in being selected as first emergency back for .Otago, Tins is Lindsay’s first season in hockey. B. wore, who was asked to captain the Otago, team at Timaru, was not available for selection, much to his regret.. The North Otago eleven played Otago at Dunedin on Saturday last, and, although defeated, put up a creditable showing, considering they were without the services of their captain (B. Here), who is undoubtedly the outstanding player in Otago at .the present time, and that four other replacements to the original selection had been. made, ine local players and officials speak highly f the hospitality extended to them by the Otago Association. As the final meeting of the Referees’ Association will be. held to-night, all members are requested to make special efforts to be present.
