LAWN TENNIS

DUNEDIN UNION The annual report of the Duucdin Lawn Tennis Union states: — We have now 15 clubs affiliated and 30 teams playing in the competitions, an increase of three clubs and eight teams on the previous season. The St. Leonards Club wps unable to enter a team and new clubs affiliating were Tainui, Aotea, and Mosgiel. Mornington also re-entered the competitions. With the increased number of teams competing and with some clubs entering three. teams, the question of equitable arranging of courts for home and home matches is becoming a difficult matter. All grades provided keen competition, a play-off being necessary in the B and C Grades. Ravensbourne is again to be cougratuated on winning the A and B Grades and St. Kilda Methodist and Aotea on winning the C and D Grades respectively. The union ladder gave your committee some cause for concern over its inactivity and an addition to the ladder rules was made to the effect that at least one challenge per month must be played or players” names would automatically be removed from the ladder. This year it is hoped that members of clubs (particularly the ladies) will evince more interest in these ladder challenges, as by such players will certainly gain much experience and instruction. The balance sheet, shows a favourable position, the creditbalance being £8 5s 7d, as against £7 Os 8d for the previous year. The Easter tournament was a conspicuous success. Entries showed an increase over last year, the number of players participating being 100. The handicapping on the new system gave the juniors a better chance, as is seen by the results. At the conclusion of last season the union arranged a dance,' to which all members of clubs affiliated to the union received an invitation, and at which the shield cups and trophies won during the year were presented by Dr Borrie. This function was an outstanding ’ success socially, but did not receive the support that was anticipated, and showed a debit balance' of £3 17s. MOSGIEL PRESBYTERIAN CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Mosgiel Presbyterian Lawn Tennis Club last night. The annual report and balance sheet covered the year’s activities and were adopted. The Rev. Hugh Graham was elected president; Mr J. Aitken, vice-president; Mr J. Williamson, secretary; Mr C. Aitken, treasurer; and Misses W. Gibson, T. Moody, M. Graham, A. Gibson, G. Mitchell, E.
