MISS KAY CHAMPION
EASY WIN IN FINAL BRILLIANT DRIVING (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegrap!- "opyrißht.) MELBOURNE, September 7. (Received Sept. 7, at 11.15 p.m.) The Women's National Golf Championship of Australia was won by Miss 0. Kay (New Zealand), 9 and 8, from Miss J. Hood Hammond. The spectators were treated to a delightful exhibition under trying circumstances, a gale
in the morning and rain in the afternoon. Miss Kay, in a strong wind, drove long, raking balls well down the fairway, and was a treat to watch. Neither player putted well. The approximate figures in the first round were:— Miss Kay: Out, 40 (2 up); in, 45 (3 up. Miss Hammond: Out, 43; in, 48. Miss Kay fully justified her plus two rating, and her victory was exceedingly popular. Never has such well-controlled driving by a woman player been seen. MEN'S TOURNAMENT. THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. MELBOURNE, September 7. (Received Sept. 7, at 11 p.m.) In the Open Golf Championship M. L. Kelly (New South Wales professional) leads the field with 73. His play under bad conditions was brilliant. Other first round scores were:— F. Hedlara (Victoria) 76. Len Nettlefold (Tasmania) 76. H. W. Hattersley (New South Wales) 76. J. Ferrier (New South Wales) 77. F. Thompson (South Australia) 77. V. Richardson (South Australia) 77. W. M'Kenzie (New South Wales) 77. S. Richardson (New South Wales) 77. E. Wood (Victoria) 77. W. Edgar (Victoria) 77. Another 18 holes will be played tomorrow, and the leading 60 and those tieing will play the last two rounds on Saturday. There are 106 competitors. M. J. Byan, the hoMer, returned 84.
