SCIENTISTS CONFER
GATHERING AT LEICESTER DISCUSSION ON ATOMS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 6. Scientists from all over Britain and many foreign countries are assembling at Leicester for the meetings of the British Association, which will begin there tomorrow. Among the discussions of special interest on the programme, which deals with almost every branch of science, will be one on the transmission of atoms, to be opened by Lord Rutherford. THE REIGN OF THE MACHINE. LONDON, September 6. (Received Sept. 7, at 5.5 p.m.) " If civilisation escapes its other perils it has no need to fear the reign of the machine," stated Sir Frederick Hopkins in his presidential address to the British Association at Leicester. He emphasised that there was more danger in money versus man than in machine versus man. Though scientists knew that machines for the replacement of human beings must continue, where it would end nobody 1 knew, but an optimistic view was justified. One of the necessities of the new era would be a better planned use of leisure, in which the use of wireless on a large scale for educational purposes would be important.
