THE NEVIS GORGE PROPOSITION

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln recent issues of your paper there appeared the following statement respecting the Nevis Gorge:—" In a small section at the mouth of this golden river 3436 ounces were recovered." As a resident in that locality for a great number of years I am satisfied that that statement is not in accordance with fact, and I defy any person to prove that gold to that amount has been obtained at the mouth of the Nevis River. About the year 1897 a small dredge worked at the mouth'of the Nevis, and continued working upstream in the Kawarau River. That dredge certainly did not secure the 3436 ounces, as its returns were practically nil. A few years later the Grand Junction Company put a dredge on in the same locality, and met with no better success. I was one of the party of tributors who took over the Grand Junction dredge, and working at the mouth of the Nevis River, we did not get enough gold to pay for our tobacco. Certainly, the 3436 ounces were not recovered during the dredging period, and I would like to know when and by whom .that quantity of gold was recovered. I consider that such a statement, if not verified, is misleading to the investing public. Regarding the Nevi fi River itself, the proposition may be quite sound, provided that too much cash is not given to the promoters.—l am, etc., Old Miner. September 6.
