SPORTS QUEEN The Bowlers’ Ball for the Sports Queen was an outstanding success, and the big crowd certainly appeared to be having an enjoyable evening. The arrangements were in the hands of a strong committee, and everything went smoothly. During the evening Mrs R. Hudson thanked the bowlers for their splendid effort, both of that evening and for their work in connection with the indoor rinks at the Savoy. All the other queens were pres-ent-during the evening. , The Hunt Club gala' day at Tahuna Park is the next big effort for the Sports Queen, and a varied programme has been arranged, including several novelties bj the Hunt Club and other sporting bodies. Proceedings will commence at 2 p.m. with a miniature hunt, in which the hounds of the club will be seen in action, and thereafter there will be no Ji rea K in the programme until .well after o o’clock. The Otago Athletic and Cycling Club is giving up its usual road race to assist. The motor cycling section of the Motor Club ‘is staging some trick riding, the Whippet Club is putting on a programme of flat and hurdle events, and the Tug-of-war Association is also : doing its part. Altogether a varied after-noon-9 sport is assured; At Logan Park the two controlling bodies of lawn tennis will combine to assist the carnival, and an amusing afternoon has been arranged. Special attractions for tennis players include the three-sided Yankee tournament and the exhibition matches in fancy dress between teams re-, presenting the players of 1840 and 1940. In -the evening there will be a P'ng-P. O , tournament, and a cabaret, with sideshows, J both afternoon and evening. Next Wednesday an attractive programme has been arranged for an afternoon concert at the Hudson Kindergarten at Cavershara. Particulars .will be announced later. FINAL DEMONSTRATIONS The arrangements for the final demonstration on September 16 .are now practically ’complete, and the Central Executive Committee of the Carnival is gratified with the response to. its appeal tor wholehearted support in making the occasion a worthy finish to the competition. The four Queen Committees are arranging short entertainments which will be staged between offerings by the city bands and orchestras. The floor' of the hall will be cleared for promenade P'' r but the upstairs portion of.the hall will be available for. those who wish to be seated, a limited number of these seats being set apart as reserves. The Concert Chamber will be open all the evening’ for dancers only. As soon as possible, after ,11 o clock (the hour at which the voting ceases), the: final .result of the Queen contest will be announced. Prior to this v half-hour y progress reports of the voting will be made by means of flags displayed on the stage. ■ ■ CIVIC QUEEN Two bright events which are being looked forward to are the CeSter Ball and the Children’s Fancy Dress Ball, both ot which have been organised by the Civic Queen Committee. It is claimed that the decorations and other novel features that will characterise these functions will be something entirely different to anything previously attempted. The juvenile section of the community have not been catered for .during the Carnival to the same extent that the elders have, so that next Thursday’s event is no doubt being eagerly looked forward to by the younger fr Xhe Miniature Rifle Association’s offer to carry out a shooting tournament in the Drill Hall next Saturday evening in the interests of the Civic Queen campaign has been gratefully accepted by that committee, and arrangements have beenmade tor matches between the various civic departments. and for demonstrations of miniature rifle shooting. THE SERVICES QUEEN' Last evening a delightful ball was held in the Town Hall under the auspices of the Services Queen (Mrs Norah Roes). The elaborate decorations of red, white, and blue streamers, baskets of ferns, tree ferns, and military towers, battlements, guns, and aeroplanes were excellently ried out, and evoked admiration from everybody. During the evening there was a specialty dance by a pupil of Miss Lily Stevens, a poster parade, and a tableau representing varying stages of military uniform. __________
